How did you first know you wanted to become an artist? I have been interested in art since I was probably 2 or 3 years old. Honestly, I cannot remember a day that art was not in my life. I was always around it because my parents were both very artistic. I went up to my dad and asked him to draw me a girl. I watched his every move. I was always drawing and attempting to paint, always creating. What are your thoughts on "low-brow art" and the"movement" that has emerged under that title? Well, I love the whole movement. I feel it has familiarized many people with art and has connected it with music and other cultural genres, but I am starting to feel the title it is a bit antiquated. The work that is now tagged low brow has changed, too much work is now being lumped into that title. “Low-brow art “ originated with hot rod culture, punk rock and comics. I feel some of that low brow world has moved on - maybe even to high brow, or I should say, it is now accepted and appreciated by high brow. The problem is I don’t know what to call it now. Some people say Pop Surrealism. Truthfully, I have mixed feelings about this. What are some of the inspirations for your artwork? I am inspired by everything! Mainly COLORS and light. But I am also very influenced by fashion, punk rock, traveling, interesting interiors, amazing- beautiful- strong- talented women, jewelry, animals, all things Japanese-Kawaii, vintage things, chandeliers, and anything sparkly. Each show I work on has a different theme and new inspiration. It then becomes my obsession and passion while I am working on that body of work. At that point the pieces just need to come out of me. I would not be able to paint anything if I was not captivated with it. |
